To run a Boxing Day sale on WooCommerce or Shopify while you are away, schedule every price change and coupon in advance with fixed start and end dates, set the store timezone to match the customers you announce the times to, and switch off anything that can oversell. Then do one final check on 24 December, so the sale starts, runs and ends on its own without anyone watching the admin.
Schedule the sale so it runs without staff
Boxing Day (26 December in the UK, Australia and Canada) falls on a Saturday in 2026, straight after Christmas Day on Friday. The aim is a sale that needs no one to press a button at midnight.
WooCommerce
- Scheduled sale prices. Each product (and each variation) has a sale price with “from” and “to” dates. Set both, or the sale runs into January.
- Coupon expiry. Every coupon has an expiry date.
- Timezone. Sale dates and coupon expiry follow the timezone in Settings > General. If you sell in both the UK and Australia, decide which local midnight you are advertising and say so in the banner.
- Background tasks. Scheduled sales are switched on and off by WordPress scheduled tasks, which normally run when someone visits the site. A real server cron job calling WordPress cron removes that delay.
Shopify
- Discounts (codes and automatic discounts) take a start date and an end date.
- Compare-at prices do not schedule themselves natively. Use a bulk edit before you leave, or an app or automation that changes them at a set time. Check what your plan includes.
- Theme content such as the announcement bar and homepage banner: if nobody can publish a sale theme on the day, word the banner so it is accurate before and during the sale (“Boxing Day sale starts 26 December”).
Stock sync and overselling
Nobody is there to spot a product going negative, so before you leave:
- Turn on stock management for every product in the sale. In WooCommerce, check “Manage stock?” on each product or variation. In Shopify, check that “Track quantity” is on.
- Turn off backorders (WooCommerce) and “Continue selling when out of stock” (Shopify) on sale items, unless you deliberately want pre-orders.
- Check your sync. If stock also lives in an ERP, a POS, a warehouse system or a marketplace, find out how often it syncs and in which direction. A slow sync can sell the same last unit twice. Read the sync log for errors the week before Christmas.
- Hold back a buffer. For items shared across channels, list a little less than you physically hold.
- Unpaid order holds. WooCommerce has a “Hold stock (minutes)” setting under Products > Inventory so abandoned payments release stock back to the sale.
Coupon stacking rules
When prices are already reduced, a stacked coupon can take a product below cost. Write your rules down first, then set them in the platform.
WooCommerce coupon settings
- Individual use only: the coupon cannot be combined with other coupons.
- Exclude sale items: the coupon does not apply to products already on sale. A safe default for older codes still live, such as a newsletter code.
- Usage limit per coupon and per user, plus minimum and maximum spend.
- Product and category exclusions, for example gift cards and clearance lines.
Shopify discount combinations
Each Shopify discount has a combinations setting that controls whether it can be used together with product, order or shipping discounts. Check it on every active discount, including old automatic ones.
Then test: put a sale item, a full-price item and a gift card in the cart, and try each live code. If a total is one you would not accept, fix the rule.
Returns messaging and clearance stock
Returns, in general terms
Many shops extend their returns window for Christmas purchases so gifts can be returned in January. Show your policy in the same words on the returns page, the sale FAQ and the order confirmation email. Consumer law sets minimum rights for online purchases, and those minimums differ between the UK, Australia and Canada (and between Canadian provinces). A “no returns on sale items” line can conflict with them. Check the rules for each country you ship to, or ask an adviser, and never promise less than the law gives.
Clearing seasonal stock
- Put Christmas-specific lines in their own category or collection, so you can discount and later hide them as a group.
- Use a tag or category for “clearance” and exclude it from coupons, so the clearance price is the final price.
- Decide now what happens to each product page when the stock runs out in January: keep, redirect or remove.
- Keep clearance off the homepage banner until 26 December, so it does not undercut full-price Christmas sales.
What to check on 24 December before you switch off
- Place a test order on the live site for a sale item scheduled to start on 26 December, and confirm it still shows the normal price today.
- Open the scheduled sale list (WooCommerce products filtered by sale, or your Shopify discounts list) and read every start and end date and time.
- Confirm the store timezone once more.
- Check stock levels on your top sale items and that tracking is on.
- Try each live coupon code against a sale item and a full-price item.
- Check that order, refund and stock alert emails reach an inbox someone will glance at, even once a day.
- Confirm the Christmas delivery messaging has been switched off or changed to post-Christmas dispatch dates.
- Take a full backup (WooCommerce) or duplicate the live theme (Shopify), and write down how to undo the sale in one step.
- Set an uptime monitor to alert your phone, and agree who answers it.
- Freeze plugin, app and theme updates until January.
Boxing Day and January sale timeline
Now to Black Friday (27 October to 27 November 2026)
Decide the Boxing Day and January offers, stacking rules and returns wording.
After Cyber Monday (from 1 December)
Remove Black Friday and Cyber Monday codes, or set them to expired. Load the Boxing Day prices and discounts with their start and end dates. Test on staging.
Thursday 24 December
Run the checklist above, then switch off.
Friday 25 December
Nothing to change.
Saturday 26 December (Boxing Day)
The sale starts on schedule. A quick look at one product page and the latest orders is enough.
Thursday 31 December to Friday 1 January 2027
Either end the Boxing Day sale or let it roll into a January sale with its own dates. Do not leave open-ended prices running.
Mid to late January 2027
End the January sale, remove expired codes and handle sold-out seasonal product pages.
Frequently asked questions
Can WooCommerce start a Boxing Day sale automatically?
Yes. Set the sale price with “from” and “to” dates on each product or variation, and set expiry dates on coupons.
How do I stop customers stacking a coupon on top of sale prices?
In WooCommerce, tick “Exclude sale items” and “Individual use only” on the coupon. In Shopify, open the discount and turn off the combinations you do not want. Test with a real cart before the sale starts.
What if stock syncs from another system?
Find out the sync interval and direction, check its log before Christmas, and list a small buffer below your physical stock on items sold in more than one channel.
Should my January sale use the same discount codes?
Use new codes with their own end dates. That keeps reports clean and stops a shared Boxing Day code running all month.
The FlamePro WooCommerce website for the UK and Australia and the Segway Navimow UK Shopify and WordPress website are examples of stores I have worked on. For the delivery side of December, see my notes on Christmas delivery cut-off dates. If you want the sale scheduled and tested before you leave, you can hire a WooCommerce developer for your Boxing Day setup, or a Shopify developer if your store runs on Shopify.
Not sure your sale will run cleanly on 26 December without you? Send me a short note about your store and I will tell you what I would check first.
