Diwali Sale on WooCommerce and Shopify: 2026 Setup Checklist

To run a Diwali sale on WooCommerce or Shopify in 2026, schedule your prices and coupons to start before Dhanteras (Friday 6 November) and run through Diwali (Sunday 8 November), test UPI and cash on delivery checkout on a real phone, and tell shoppers early whether you deliver to their pincode. Get GST-ready invoices, mobile speed and order updates sorted before the sale goes live, not during it.

Sale scheduling and festive offers

The safest sale switches itself on and off. Manual price changes at midnight are where mistakes happen.

WooCommerce

  • Each product has a sale price field with a Schedule link. Set the start and end dates there so prices change automatically. For variable products, set it on each variation.
  • WooCommerce scheduled sales rely on WP-Cron, which runs when the site gets traffic. On a quiet staging site, or a host that disables WP-Cron, the sale may start late. Ask your host whether a real server cron is set up.

Shopify

  • Create automatic discounts or discount codes in the Discounts section with a start and end date and time.
  • If you use compare-at prices for a “was / now” display, those do not schedule themselves natively. Bulk edit them, or use an app that schedules price changes. Check your plan and app before relying on this.
  • Set your store time zone to India Standard Time in settings, so “starts 6 November, 00:00” means midnight for your customers.

Coupons that do not break your margin

  1. Set an expiry date on every coupon, ending after Diwali.
  2. Set usage limits per coupon and per customer.
  3. Decide whether coupons stack with sale prices. In WooCommerce there is an “exclude sale items” option on each coupon. In Shopify, check the combination settings on each discount.
  4. Place a test order with every coupon before you announce it.

UPI and cash on delivery at checkout

Indian shoppers expect UPI and, for many categories, cash on delivery. Both platforms support Indian payment gateways that offer UPI, cards, net banking and wallets. Which methods appear depends on the gateway and your account activation, so log in to your gateway dashboard and confirm UPI is enabled for live payments, not only test mode.

  • Cash on delivery: WooCommerce includes a Cash on delivery payment method in core. Shopify lets you add cash on delivery as a manual payment method. In both, you can limit it (for example by shipping method in WooCommerce) if you want to reduce COD on high-value orders.
  • Test on a phone: place a small real UPI order from a mobile browser and from inside the Instagram or WhatsApp in-app browser. Payment redirects sometimes behave differently there.

GST-ready invoices

Neither WooCommerce core nor a basic Shopify store produces a full Indian tax invoice on its own. Most stores use an invoice extension (WooCommerce) or an order printing or invoice app (Shopify) that can show your GSTIN, the customer’s details, HSN codes and the tax breakdown.

  • Enter your business details and GSTIN in the invoice tool, and add HSN codes to products if the tool supports them.
  • Check that tax settings show the right tax for intra-state and inter-state orders.
  • Confirm sequential invoice numbering does not reset or skip during the sale rush.
  • Do not guess tax rates. Confirm the rates for your products, and how discounts affect the taxable value, with your accountant before the sale starts.

Pincode and delivery messaging

A customer buying a Diwali gift wants to know, before paying, whether it will arrive in time.

  • In WooCommerce, shipping zones can be limited by postcode. You can enter individual pincodes, wildcards such as 7000*, or ranges such as 700001...700099. Customers outside those zones will not see a shipping option at checkout.
  • A pincode checker on the product page, before the cart, saves a lot of abandoned checkouts. On WooCommerce this is usually an extension or a small custom feature linked to your courier’s serviceability data. On Shopify it is usually an app.
  • Put a clear line near the Add to Cart button: last order date for Diwali delivery, and whether COD is available for that pincode. Get the cut-off dates from your courier partner, not from guesswork.

Mobile speed on Indian networks

Most festive traffic arrives on phones, often on patchy mobile data. Test the pages that matter during the sale: the home page, the sale collection or category page, a product page, cart and checkout.

  1. Open PageSpeed Insights for each URL and check the field data. Google’s “good” thresholds for Core Web Vitals are LCP up to 2.5 s, INP up to 200 ms and CLS up to 0.1, measured at the 75th percentile.
  2. In Chrome DevTools, throttle the network to a slow mobile profile and load the product page. Watch for the main image appearing late and for buttons that shift while you tap.
  3. Compress and resize festive banners. A large animated diya or fireworks banner on the home page is often the slowest thing on it.

WhatsApp order updates

Many Indian customers would rather get an order confirmation on WhatsApp than by email. Automated messages go through the WhatsApp Business Platform, usually via an approved provider or a plugin or app that connects to one.

  • Collect opt-in at checkout with a clear checkbox. Do not message people who have not agreed.
  • Message templates usually need approval before you can send them, so submit them well before the sale.
  • Start with the essentials: order confirmed, shipped with tracking link, and COD confirmation for high-value orders.

Diwali sale WooCommerce and Shopify timeline for 2026

This week (26 October to 1 November)

  • Decide offers, coupon rules and which products are excluded.
  • Set up invoice tools and confirm tax settings with your accountant.
  • Submit WhatsApp message templates for approval.
  • Run speed tests and fix the heaviest images and scripts.

Week of 2 November

  • Schedule sale prices and discounts.
  • Place real test orders: UPI, card, COD, each coupon.
  • Add pincode and delivery cut-off messaging.
  • Take a full backup, pause non-urgent updates, and agree who watches orders from 6 to 8 November.

Friday 6 November (Dhanteras) to Sunday 8 November (Diwali)

  • Check the first orders: correct price, correct tax on the invoice, payment marked paid, WhatsApp message sent.
  • Watch for failed UPI payments and out-of-stock variants still showing as available.
  • Update delivery messaging as courier cut-offs pass, for example “will arrive after Diwali”.

Frequently asked questions

Can I schedule a Diwali sale in WooCommerce without a plugin?

Yes, for simple cases. Each product’s sale price can be scheduled, and coupons have expiry dates. For store-wide sales or sales that start at a specific hour, an extension is usually more practical.

Should I offer cash on delivery during the Diwali sale?

Many Indian shoppers prefer it, but COD orders can be refused at the door. Keep it on, restrict it for high-value orders if refusals are a problem, and review your own refusal rate after the sale.

Does Shopify or WooCommerce create GST invoices automatically?

Not fully on their own. Both need an invoice extension or app to produce a tax invoice with your GSTIN, HSN codes and tax breakdown. Confirm the rates and invoice requirements with your accountant.

How do I show customers if I deliver to their pincode?

Add a pincode checker on the product page using an extension, app or small custom feature, and limit shipping zones by pincode at checkout.

If you want this set up properly before Dhanteras, you can hire a WooCommerce developer for scheduling, checkout testing and pincode messaging. I work with Indian stores as well as international ones, and there is more on that on my hire a developer in India page.
